Is it appropriate to give a diamond head for a Christmas gift?

We have a manager of women and girls go all out for a Christmas dinner. Our coach wants as a Christmas treat for all of us and suggested we all go in on a gift for our manager. Anybody want to buy a diamond necklace, but Others, including myself, feel diamonds are a little more intimate and personal, not something you give to a person working with and for. What do you think?
